I was excited to take another mini-break this week with Captain Tony Borg of Firefly. I hope you enjoy it too!

What is your current role and how long in superyacht industry?

I have been a captain in the yacht industry for the past eight years, and the charter industry for the last four years. My role as captain onboard Firefly started just over two years ago when we took the boat from San Remo to Malta. I am the only captain onboard Firefly with her current owner.

What is your favourite destination and why?

My favourite destination has to be Amalfi coast and Naples area. I have been going annually for the past four years and it is a wonderful place to be with so many places to visit in these areas and not a lot of travelling to do in between.

While Amalfi is a beautiful place to be, there is also Positano with a pretty bay to anchor and also a wonderful view with plenty of colourful buildings and some great restaurants. Just a few miles away I have to mention Capri, an icon for western Italy which hundreds of boats visit each year. The walk on Capri is amazing, nice beach and pretty good restaurants, one to mention is Lemon Trees!

In the Gulf of Naples i can’t forget Sorrento with high cliffs and a pretty comfortable marina.

Naples is the best place in this area for the guests who like shopping at high end retailers, while the marina is also pretty good for calm seas. Just about 20 miles away from Naples there is Procida with pretty bays to anchor, but not a lot to do on land. Just about five to eight miles away there is Ischia which is a very nice island with pretty beaches, and I must mention the Thermal Baths on Ischia which most of my guests will visit.

Last but not least about 60 to 70 miles north from Ischia there is Ponza which has one of the best beaches I have ever been to it is called Chiaia di Luna, crystal clear water with plenty of shallows for guests who don’t like deep seas.

What are your favourite toys to play with onboard?

Although on Firefly we have quite a lot of toys, I might have to cheat a bit on this question as I have two favourite toys! So first toy I need to mention is our jet ski, a Seadoo RXP RS 2017 Model which is over 300 BHP and can easily go over 70mph, don’t worry about guests who are afraid of going up to that speed as we have a special key which limits the speed up to 45 mph!

The other favourite toy is of course the SEABOB which we have three of onboard 2x F5s 2017 Model and 1x Cayago F7 2013 model, both can reach speeds up to 10 knots and can go to more than 20 metres deep if needed. Most of my clients like seabobs as they are really easy to use and no license is required, and also the best solution for snorkelling and exploring the caves.

If you could only choose one thing that makes a superyacht charter so special, what would it be and why?

One thing that makes a charter yacht so special has to be the yacht itself and also the crew. A yacht has to be built for a variety of likings, and for different tastes amongst the clients. Another thing that is important is the crew; the crew is one of the most important factors you should have on a yacht. I believe a young and motivated crew is the best idea, as when you have these characteristics, they can make everything possible or never say ‘no’ making a better experience for the clients who keep coming back for more!

Thanks again to Tony and West Nautical for the interview!
